About 150 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, Nam Cat Tien is one of the largest protected areas in Vietnam – an intricate network of wetlands and tropical forests covering nearly 74,000 hectares, bisected by a river, the larger section of which is about 50 or 60 kilometers is wide in either direction. Biodiversity is considerable: more than fifty species are listed in the Red Book as endangered, including Siamese crocodiles and Indochinese tigers. Of particular interest is the large bird population – over three hundred species have been discovered to date. In addition to the abundant animals, Cat Tien has 62 kinds of orchids.
